Malacara Volcano

It is located 42 km southeast of the city of Malargüe, on the way to the Laguna Llancanelo reserve.

This volcano has a height of just over 1800 meters above sea level. Its name is due to the resemblance to the spotted face of the Malacara horses, whose name comes from the linguistic custom of the local inhabitants.

The activity that takes place there is guided and consists of a trek that allows us to enter it through its gullies and from there understand its origin and evolution. On the other hand, when we climb it we get a privileged panoramic view of the north of Payunia, of the imposing DS3 antenna belonging to the European Space Agency and of the peaceful Laguna Llancanelo.

The trek is guided, has a medium level of difficulty and a total duration of approximately 2:40 to 3 hours and a quarter. During the tour you have to climb iron stairs placed to pass large stones. The walk to the viewpoint is about 400m long and has a 45° slope, which also means an effort. You must bring water and suitable footwear (hiking shoes, boots or shoes that do not have smooth soles), long pants (mandatory), a coat, a hat or cap, and sunscreen. Long sleeves are recommended.

Pregnant women and people with reduced mobility or heart problems, untreated high blood pressure, recent sprains, etc. are not allowed. Pets are also not allowed.

You can get to the volcano in your own vehicle, for which you must reserve an appointment and pay the entrance fees at our agency, so that we can coordinate the meeting with the guide. From the city of Malargüe it is 45 km, half paved and half gravel. On the gravel there are quite marked ‘saws’; for that reason you must travel slowly. Going in a private vehicle you should consider leaving Malargüe 1:30 hours before the appointment. Another option is that we can transport you to the volcano, which is done with a minimum of 6 people.

To get to the Malacara volcano you can use Google Maps, taking into account that this application correctly indicates the route, but it does not discriminate between asphalt and gravel (22 km are gravel) so the time is incorrect.
